ALBION, Ill. (AP) – Illinois State officials have approved a cultivation center to grow marijuana in Albion.
The Illinois Department of Agriculture announced on Tuesday the town in Edwards County will join 16 cultivation centers to grow marijuana once recreational sales become legal on January 1. State officials also approved a cultivation center in Shelbyville on Tuesday.
Initially, only cultivation centers that have been licensed to grow medical marijuana can apply for recreational use. The other centers are in cities including Aurora, Dwight, and Joliet.
Michigan also recently began legal sales of recreational marijuana after voters approved it last year.
