Marijuana, though legal in Illinois, will not be allowed on state campuses

(WEHT) – Cannabis will be legal in Illinois in January, but students and staff won’t be allowed to use it on campus.

Southern Illinois University spokesman Rae Goldsmith said the Drug-Free Schools and Community Act prohibits marijuana on campuses as part of federal law.

The university has guidelines for those who use medical marijuana, but Goldsmith said students caught using recreational cannabis on university property could face penalties.

“In most cases, we try to start with an educational rather than an unappreciative approach so that students can make a better decision the next time around,” said Goldsmith.

Goldsmith said the university is here to help anyone understand their policy.

All they would have to do is contact the university.
