OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) – A new monument honoring the families of those who lost loved ones serving our country is planned for the Owensboro riverfront.

A gold star family’s monument will be placed near the Shelton Veterans Memorial at Smothers Park.

Gold star mother Cathy Mullins says Owensboro Mayor Tom Watson started raising money to cover the cost of installing one.

It honors the families who lost sons and daughters in combat.

“It’s not just about the current war and our family, this is about all of those, the offspring, the grandchildren and the great grandchildren. It means a lot. Our heroes will live on forever with monuments like this to teach our next generation.”

Mullins says construction on the monument could start as soon as next spring.
