More than 400 applications for absentee ballots rejected

VANDERBURGH COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT)- With a little less than two weeks to election day the Vanderburgh County Election Office has their hands full with an increase of requests for absentee ballots. But now they have another issue.

Some people who requested an application for an absentee ballot got theirs already partially filled out with the democratic party box checked.

Someone, not associated with the election office, filled it in while sending the applications out. The election board has received calls and complaints about the checked box.

The office rejected more than 400 pre-marked applications.

“The law doesn’t require us to do anything besides reject them. We can reject them, put them in a drawer, and be done but we didn’t think that was fair to the voters. so we started contacting the voters and saying ‘this application was invalid but we’ll send you a new one and we’ll get you a ballot,” County Clerk Carla Hayden explains.

The prosecutors office is investigating.
