POSEY COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) – A Mount Vernon couple has been arrested for child neglect.

Indiana State Police arrested 53-year-old Tammy Crowe and 55-year-old John Crowe. They’re charged with neglect of a dependent, which is a Class 6 Felony.

ISP began an investigation after the Indiana Department of Child Services removed the couple’s children from their Mt. Vernon home on Nov. 13th due to dangerous and deplorable conditions.

During the investigation, ISP troopers says the couple’s nine-year-old and eight-year-old sons were living in an upstairs portion of the home and were locked up there for long periods of time.

According to ISP, there were several large holes in the walls and no electrical service to the light fixtures upstairs. There was on portable light that was powered by an extension cord.

The boys were also required to use a plastic jug when they used the restroom because there wasn’t a bathroom upstairs, ISP says.

Troopers say there was also a piece of the window was broken, exposing the boys to cold temperatures.

The upstairs bedroom reportedly was only heated by an electric fan mounted near the stairwell downstairs when the door was open and not locked.

The couple is being held in the Posey County Jail.
