NAACP of Evansville to hold press conference concerning arrest of 14-year-old

Local News

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – The NAACP of Evansville will hold a press conference regarding the arrest of a teen earlier this month.

The press conference will be held Wednesday, August 21st at 1:00 p.m. at 501 John Street, Ste. 8, in Evansville.

On Aug. 8th, EPD responded to a school bus fight, when they said a student got off the bus and resisted.

The police department released more than nine minutes of video, showing the body camera perspective of the involved officers.

The fight happened on the bus after school.

Police say during the investigation, a 14-year-old student gave a false name, then jumped out of the emergency door in the back. They say the student refused to get on the bus, and pulled away from officers when they tried to put him in handcuffs.

Police said its officers used techniques taught in the academy while taking the 14-year-old down and getting him in handcuffs.

Some have said the officers use of force was excessive, but EPD stood by its officers’ use of force and it was ruled justifiable.

Sheriff Dave Wedding said the EPD officers acted ‘responsibly’ during the arrest of the teen.

The NAACP of Evansville has been investigating the incident.
