NRA warns President Trump about background checks support

(CNN) – Sources say the NRA is warning President Trump about his openness to stronger background checks.

In the wake of the mass shootings in Texas and Ohio, the president said he was open to background checks on gun buyers.

But a source told CNN the NRA Chief told the president support for a background check bill would not be popular with his voter base.

However, President Trump said he plans to work with congress to address mass shootings – starting with background checks and mental illness.

In a tweet about the shootings, the NRA said the call for background checks is rhetoric for “billionaire activists and campaign rallies”.
