OHIO COUNTY, Ky. (WEHT) – The Ohio County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a possible scam involving Craig’s List.

The sheriff’s office has received complaints about the possible scam.

According to the sheriff’s office, the scammer is using a fake name and account to contact victims on Craig’s List. They’re trying to buy whatever the person’s selling, then sends them a check for a much larger amount of money than what was asked.

Once the seller receives the check, the scammer asks them to let them know when the check is cashed and asks for the additional money to be wired back to them.

The sheriff’s office says if it seems too good to be true, then it probably is.

Other tips include don’t send your personal information to someone you don’t know and if someone is asking you to make a payment via gift cards, then it’s most likely a scam.

Check on your elders and make sure they’re not getting scammed.
