OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) – One of two coal-fired units at OMU’s Elmer Smith Plant in Owensboro was shut off.
Utility officials said they shut down the older unit, which was used since the 1960’s early last month.
A spokesperson said it no longer makes economic sense to operate it.
OMU originally planned to shut down one of two units this summer.
Last year, OMU agreed to a deal with Big Rivers to buy solar power.
The first unit will be on standby in case of a catastrophic failure with the second coal-fired unit.
The second unit is scheduled to be shut down next year.
