NEWBURGH, Ind. (WEHT)- An eighth-grader at Castle South Middle School received a surprise that was out of this world while attending an assembly to learn more about astronaut doctor Mae Jemison.

Jemison became the first black woman to travel into space when she served as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor.

During the assembly, student Madeleine Stewart found out that not only would she would meet Jemison when she visits Evansville, she also gets to go to NASA Space Academy during spring break.

“The thought that maybe there’s something else out there. There’s not just humans. And there’s other places and planets and galaxies that we can um discover,” Stewart said.

Stewart is a lifelong lover of chemistry and space. She said she hopes the opportunity launches her science career.

She will leave for camp on March 22.
