Owensboro firefighters making changes amid coronavirus

OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) — Owensboro firefighters are changing their response to certain emergency calls to avoid infections.

Battalion chief Steve Leonard says they’re ramping up usage of protective equipment in case of possible coronavirus related problems on medical calls.

They’re lowering the number of firefighters who first enter a home, and dispatchers are asking callers more questions on medical situations to help determine what’s needed.

“Because of the fact that each of the firefighters respond from a station that has many firefighters in that same station, we have to really make sure to protect ourselves because if it affects one, it can shut down an entire station,” Leonard said.

Leonard says fire departments around the country are dealing with issues on potential exposure of first responders to coronavirus.
