GIBSON COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) – Peabody Midwest Management Services, LLC plans to suspend operations at its Somerville Central Mine facility, according to WARN notices obtained by Eyewitness News through the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

The WARN notices dated August 2 cite ‘uneconomical business conditions’ as the reason for the planned closure.

According to the two notices, over 120 employees will be laid off on October 4, 2019.

Following that date, Peabody said there will be a period of reclamation where a limited number of employees may be asked to complete the mine reclamation work.

The layoffs will impact seven management and supervisor positions and 121 workers.
