Evansville City Councilman Justin Elpers shared a petition on Facebook Monday, which is calling for the Evansville Public Library (EVPL) to remove “Drag Queen Story Hour” from its events calendar.

As of Monday, the petition had just over 100 supporters.

Previously, Elpers had called the event ‘reprehensible.’ He said there are other ways for the library to promote diversity and acceptance, and that he believes drag queen could confuse young kids.

The library director said “Drag Queen Story Hour” is a popular event across the country and the library is excited to have it.

The event is planned for Saturday, February 23 from 10-11 a.m. at EVPL North Park.

Here’s how EVPL’s website describes the event:

“Children and their families can celebrate literacy in a more glamorous way by enjoying stories, songs, and crafts led by drag kings and queens.”
