Pigeon Creek Bridge closed indefinitely, INDOT says

Local News

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – The Pigeon Creek Bridge on US 41 will be closed indefinitely, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT).

Engineers said a bridge strike on January 21 compromised the overall integrity of the 80-year-old bridge.

A semi, hauling an oversized load, missed a turn and hit the bridge.

According to INDOT, a recently completed damage report indicates the bridge suffered major damage to nearly all vertical components and weight-bearing connections.

The report found that the damage significantly impairs the bridge’s ability to handle normal traffic loads.

Early estimates indicate it could take more than a year to repair the bridge.

A traffic bypass has been put in place using the Diamond Ave. exit from southbound US 41.
