The former Schnucks on the corner of Washington Avenue and Green River Road closed in late 2016 just before the new Schnucks opened up across the street.
Now plans are moving forward for the old building.
Washington Plaza is the official name of the strip mall-like shopping center Hahn Kiefer Real Estate has planned for the space.
The exterior of the building, which first opened as Schnucks in 1977, will be remodeled. Hahn Kiefer is working with the owners to find tenants. They're in talks with medical, mortgage and title companies, as well as retailers.
"Hoping to draw some restaurants. There's gonna be a drive thru on the northeastern side of the building. Hopefully we'll have some medical options, shopping options,” Associate Broker Will Smith said.
Hahn Kiefer says the building's new owners will also soon be closing on the small parcel of land along green river, bringing the total square footage up to approximately 62,000.
Work is expected to start in June, but there is no estimated time of completion.
