Evansville police investigate deadly shooting

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – Evansville police are investigating after a deadly early morning shooting at Sportsman’s Grille and Billiards.

Police say 23-year-old Laren Hall was killed. On one of the busiest nights of the year for the Franklin Street bars, one closed their doors early.

“And one of the other bartenders came in and told me to close it down. Something just happened in the back. An incident.” Rex Tully says.

It was something the employees at Sportsman’s never expected.

“It’s just not something we know how to deal with because we don’t deal with this all the time. We’ve never had to deal with this” Tully explains.

Evansville police say it happened just before 1 A.M. Sunday morning. The off duty uniformed officer was told of a shooting near the back parking lot. After doing his best to help 23-year-old Laren Hall another man approached him.

“The officer had also been notified by a man that was also in the area that he fired a shot. That man was then questioned and talked to by police officers,” Phillip Smith says.

Police haven’t said whether or not that person is a suspect. Bar employees were asked to close the bar after the shooting and to have everyone go out the front entrance and when last call was two hours earlier than normal.

“They were very confused about it because, like I said, this typically doesn’t happen here,” Tully says.

The investigation is ongoing and police are asking if you have any information to contact Evansville Police.
