MAYFIELD, Ky. (WEHT) – Kentucky State Police are investigating how a toddler was shot in the abdomen in Graves County before being flown to a hospital.

Troopers said they received a call Tuesday night from a home in Sedalia that a 2-year-old had a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Once police and EMS arrived, the toddler was flown by helicopter to Vanderbilt Hospital.

The 25-year-old father of the victim told police that the child was unsupervised in a room that contained a loaded firearm. Zakary Page, the father, told trooper he didn’t know how the firearm was fired.

KSP said the investigation is in the preliminary stages and is ongoing at this time.

The child’s injuries are not considered life-threatening injuries.  Police said the child is in stable condition and expected to be released.
