US Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) has endorsed Jesse Ruiz in the Democratic race for Illinois Attorney General.
“For decades, Jesse has been a leader in the fight to improve public education, to protect immigrants, and to promote civil rights,” Gutierrez, the senior member of the Illinois Congressional delegation, told a crowd of supporters at a news conference held in the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago. “As Illinois Attorney General, I know that Jesse will stand tough when Donald Trump attacks our fundamental rights.”
Ruiz is an attorney and community leader.
He's also the song of Mexican immigrants.
When Ruiz announced his candidacy back in October, he said President Donald Trump's attacks on immigrant and minority rights motivated him to run for public office.
Lisa Madigan (D) is the current Illinois Attorney General, but she is not seeking re-election.
For the Democrats, the following candidates have declared their intentions to run:
- State Rep. Scott Drury
- Sharon Fairley
- Aaron Goldstein
- Renato Mariotti
- State Sen. Kwame Raoul
- Nancy Rotering
- Jesse Ruiz
- Former Gov. Pat Quinn
