EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – Thanksgiving arrived early in Evansville with the Rescue Mission handing out food to thousands.

The 97th annual Gobbler Gathering kicked off Tuesday morning from Old National Events Plaza.

The Evansville Rescue Mission – along with other community members – gave food boxes to more than 2,300 local families.

Boxes include a turkey and sides for a traditional Thanksgiving dinner.

Lots of local businesses and churches pitched in to help donate the food.

“Every single year we will have individuals that will come to us and say I know the food is for Thanksgiving, but I didn’t have any food in my house tonight and this will feed my family tonight. There’s not many greater feelings that you get to know you provided for someone in such a meaningful way.”

The Rescue Mission also stopped by several Evansville area apartments and dropped off more than 500 grocery bags full of food.
