Sign to go up in place of Memorial Day crosses in Henderson

Local News

HENDERSON, Ky (WEHT) The City of Henderson will unveil a temporary sign in Central Park acknowledging the decades-long work of the American Legion Worsham Post 40 in creating the annual Memorial Day cross display.

The Legion decided not to put up the crosses this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. But they have not ruled out a display later this year.

The sign will be unveiled at 2 p.m. on Friday on the Main Street side of Central Park with a small group that will include Mayor Steve Austin and members of the American Legion.

The cross display tradition began in 1947 with 34 crosses in Central Park. In 2019, it had grown to more than 5,300 crosses and was on course to grow again this year.
