Sign with political message in Mt. Carmel draws attention; neighbor wants it taken down

Local News

MT. CARMEL, Ill. (WEHT) – Terry Toole of Mt. Carmel is incensed over a sign that is posted in his neighborhood.

The sign has been up for quite a while, but every time Toole drives by the property where the sign is posted, it gets under his skin.

Toole says the sign offends him on every level and would like to see the sign taken down.

Jeff Thompson, the owner of the sign, says he is not his intention to offend Toole or anyone else.

The sign says, “God and Donald Trump have saved us from the devil.”

As far as taking the sign down, Thompson says that won’t happen any time soon and there might even be new one.

Thompson says he’s received a lot of support for the sign, with people stopping to take pictures.

He says it was not his intent to hurt Toole.

Toole says he’s not spoken to Thompson about the sign, but he did reach out to the mayor of Mt. Carmel to voice his concern.

According to Toole, the mayor told him the sign is covered by Thompson’s freedom of speech.
