EVSC and Teamsters haven’t met to negotiate a new contract in more than a month. Both sides say they’re willing to resolve their issues, but can’t say when it will happen.
EVSC superintendent Dr. David Smith says the board is prepared to sign contracts. Officials with Teamsters Local 215 say they want the same, but they’re not going away until they get a fair deal.
The sides disagree on two major issues. One is being forced union dues while the other, the EVSC, wants to be the arbitrator for employee grievance procedures.
The contract expired June 30.
Teamsters president Chuck Whobrey says they’ve gotten close to a deal several times… but something always seems to get in the way.
“They’re very frustrated that it’s taken as long as it has but due to our members, their hard work and effort rallying one another, they’re committed to getting a fair contract,” said Whobrey.
Teamsters Local 215 represents some 600 school employees, including school bus drivers. Both sides say they hope to reach an agreement soon.
