An Evansville man suspected of committing multiple arsons in the city is arrested during a police surveillance operation Thursday morning.
Officers originally developed 37 year old James Sharp as a suspect in the numerous arsons that happened in the area of 1st Avenue and Columbia.
Police set up the surveillance operation Wednesday night in the 900 block of West Oregon where the fires happened in August and November.
Around 12:20 a.m. officers say they spotted Sharp attempting to light a section of rolled up carpet on fire.
Police say when they tried to arrest him he refused and tried to hide a lighter.
Sharp was arrested and is now facing a number of charges, including arson. He was also arrested for Criminal Recklessness and Resisting Law Enforcement.
Eyewitness News was told the area he tried to light the fire had melted, but did not spread to any homes.
The EPD is still investigating other arsons happening in the area.
