EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – This is a very exciting project for Evansville’s Habitat for Humanity.
This year the organization is doing something very special.
They’re building a new home for a woman who served our country.
“This is my new home!”
Sherita Underhill is all smiles as she invites us to take a look inside what will soon be home for her and her son.
“I didn’t know it took so much effort to build a house, that’s for sure.”
Sherita has been here almost every day, only missing one, since work started on her home. A home that’s a first of its kind for Habitat for Humanity of Evansville. It’s the first home built for a veteran.
“It’s a very special house.”
Don Gillies, a veteran himself, is a regular builder for Habitat for Humanity. He says it’s a privilege to work alongside and help out someone who has given it all for our country.
“Here we’re able to return something to a lady who has given our country 8 years of dedicated service. It’s our way of saying thank you and here’s something we can do for you.”
Sherita is earning a lot of her sweat equity hours here, working with Don and his team, framing the house, and now, putting up the walls inside.
“We build on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturdays and so it depends on what we’re doing. Like today, we made walls. Then tomorrow we’ll put all the inside walls up. Saturday we were all out here building, and we raised up my walls. So, it’s just depending on where we get at the end of the day. How was that to see the walls going up? It was amazing. That was the best experience.”
And it’s an experience Sherita hopes Habitat for Humanity will continue to provide for other local veterans.
“It feels good. It feels good. And I hope there will be more to come.”
We’re told several veterans plan to attend the dedication ceremony when the keys to that home are handed over to Sherita.
