Update (7:08 p.m.)

DAVIESS COUNTY, Ky. (WEHT) – An inmate who walked away from a work site in Daviess County has been captured.

William Smith was captured in the north/west part of Owensboro, where residents helped deputies with his whereabouts.

According to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, Smith was working on the mow crew under the Trustee Program. He was assigned to the Kentucky Transportation Garage on Fairview Dr.

He was last seen playing basketball.

Once he was confirmed missing, a be on the look out was put out to all local agencies (Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, OPD, and KSP).

Smith was located on West 1st St. behind the old tennis house that was associated with the executive inn by the OPD.

The sheriff’s office say Smith fled from the garage, took off his jail uniform while in the Horse Creek Soccer Complex, and made it to the north/west part of Owensboro before being captured.

Originally, Smith was being held in the jail for a parole violation with charges of felony theft.

Smith was taken back to Daviess County Jail.

Three schools were put in lockout status when Smith walked away from his work site.

A reversal 911 was sent out.

29-year-old William Lewis Smith has been captured, but the details surrounding that are unclear.

He walked away from a work site around 1:30 p.m. and prompted lockouts at three Daviess County schools.


DAVIESS COUNTY, Ky. (WEHT) – A search is underway after an inmate escaped from work released Wednesday afternoon prompting three schools in Daviess County to go on lockout status.

According to a post on Facebook, the inmate is 29-year-old William Lewis Smith. He walked away from work detail in Owensboro around 1:30 p.m.

Smith is a white man with dark hair who is around 5’10” tall and weighs about 170 pounds. He has a dark complexion and is clean shaven.

Authorities believe he isn’t wearing his jail uniform.

His last known address is Columbus, OH.

This is an ongoing investigation.

DAVIESS COUNTY, Ky. (WEHT) – Three Daviess County schools are on lockout after an inmate walks off work site.

According to a spokesperson for the Daviess Co. Public Schools, Deer Park Elementary, College View Middle and DCHS are on lockout.

The schools were advised by the Director of 911 to go on a lockout status.

Students will be let out on time, but with added supervision.
