(WEHT/CNN) – Triple Crown winner Justify reportedly tested positive for drugs in the weeks before winning the Kentucky Derby last year,
According to the New York Times, the California Horse Racing Board knew about Justify’s failed drug test but let him race anyway.
The Times reports that the Board decided in private meetings to withhold the finding from the public, drop the case, and let the colt race.
It also reportedly took more than a month to confirm the results.
In a statement to CNN, Board executive director Rick Baedeker said, “We take seriously the integrity of horse racing in California and are committed to implementing the highest standards of safety and accountability for all horses, Jockeys, and participants.”
Baedecker has also said regulators acted with caution because the drug, Scopolamine, is also found in Jimson Weed, which can grow near dung and become mixed with feed.
The Board is expected to further address the matter on Thursday.
