WHITE PLAINS, Ky. (WEHT) – Two men were arrested in connection with a kidnapping and intimidation investigation, where authorities said two people were kidnapped and threatened with homemade explosives.
On Friday, the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office began investigating a missing person complaint in White Plains.
Authorities said they had been told a man and woman had left an address on North Scott St. on Thursday around 7 p.m. to ride a side-by-side UTV and had not returned.
Sheriff’s deputies said they found the two people and took them back to N. Scott St.
The two people had visible injuries after having been abducted at gunpoint, authorities said.
Authorities said they were ran off the road by a van, assaulted, placed in the van, and then taken by force to an address on Oglesby Cemetery Rd. by Danny and Dustin Massey.
According to the sheriff’s office, the victims were bound, chained, and placed into a hand-dug pit on the property.
Authorities said the victims were shown homemade explosive devices and threatened for hours.
“This is kind of the stuff you’d see in a movie. This isn’t the kind of things you’d see in Hopkins County,” adds Hopkins Co. Sheriff Matt Sanderson.
“They were threatened all night long, held in this pit and bound in this pit, they were made threats too all night long. They were shown explosive devices while they were there,” says Sheriff Sanderson.
The sheriff’s office said Dustin Massey was a suspect in a previously reported crime, which was reported by one of the kidnapping victims.
The sheriff’s office said it obtained a search warrant for the property and found homemade, intact explosive devices and other components to manufacture bombs and evidence of the reported kidnapping.
“You see the movies a lot and you think, ‘You know, you wouldn’t think something like that would happen right next door to anybody?’ It’s pretty crazy,” says Tatan Barnes of White Plains.
“It’s just gut wrenching,” adds Jennifer Phillips of White Plains. “You don’t know. We go by there all the time on 4-wheelers, or go to fishing holes behind the home there. What if they did blow something up out there?”
Authorities believe the initial abduction happened on Farmers Crossing Rd. on Thursday afternoon.
If anyone drove by and saw four people outside of a van and side-by-side UTV, they are asked to call the sheriff’s office and ask to speak with Detective Joseph Stratton.
Danny and Dustin Massey are charged with kidnapping and intimidating a witness.
