Evansville was impacted 40 years ago when 29 lives were lost during the 1977 University of Evansville plane crash.
The basketball team was on board, as well as crew members.
Wednesday was full of remembrance.
First responders were honored and remembered Wednesday morning at Oak Hill Cemetery.
In an emotional and somber ceremony, Mayor Lloyd Winnecke and UE President Tom Kazee spoke of the importance of keeping the crash relevant in the community it impacted so greatly.
Retired first responder Guy Minnis said it was an emotional day full of bad memories but also of good memories involving those who served that day.
Minnis said thinking about the event is difficult but days like Wednesday make it easier to open up.
A memorial was also unveiled, including the names of those lost that night.
