Update: Police release identity of man killed in Hopkins County fire

Update (4:21 p.m.)

HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. (WEHT) – Arson investigators are determining the cause of a fire that claimed the life of a Hopkins County man. Kentucky State Police say 66-year-old William Phillips died during the house fire in the 1100 block of Nebo Road in Nebo.

The fire started just before Midnight.

Coroners and neighbors say Phillips was found outside his home.

One neighbor says he smelled smoke after stepping outside and then saw the fire happening inside that house.

“They were just big, bright flames. Then when the electrical wiring started going, you had different flashes, there were other things popping off.”

As many as six fire departments were on scene during the fire.

Coroners say an autopsy will be done in Louisville Thursday morning.

HOPKINS CO., Ky. (WEHT) – Kentucky State Police say one man has died in a fire west of Madisonville.

Troopers say 66-year-old William Phillips was pronounced dead at the scene by the Hopkins County Coroner. Authorities identified Phillips as the person who owned the home where the fire took place.

The fire was first reported just before midnight Tuesday on Nebo Road in the area of Nebo near Providence.

An arson investigator with Kentucky State Police is continuing to look through the scene.
