Vanderburgh County Clerk responds to ballot application situation

Local News

VANDERBURGH COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT)- Vanderburgh County Clerk Carla Hayden says her office has been “inundated” with calls, including some abusive calls, after someone unaffiliated with the election office sent absentee ballot applications with the Democratic Party preselected.

Hayden says the individual was “acting on her own,” but now the clerk’s office is “paying the price,” adding that the election office has received and rejected over 400 of the preselected applications.

While not required to, Hayden says her office has reached out to voters who were impacted by improper absentee ballot applications. However, Hayden adds that her staff has received misdirected anger from the situation.

The Vanderburgh County Election Board voted to refer the matter to the prosecutor for investigation.

The deadline to request a mail ballot is 11:59 Thursday night and applications can be emailed to, faxed to 812-435-5325, or submitted online.
