VFW says property taxes have skyrocketed over the last few years

Local News

OWENSBORO, KY. (WEHT) – The VFW post 696 on Veterans Boulevard is valued around $1.8 million and that leaves the post with a $27,000 tax bill.

Last year the bill was only $8,000.

Post commander Joey Benningfield says development around the city including condos, hotels, and more are behind the big bills.

Now the VFW is exempt from Federal taxes but subject to local tax, something they are trying to change at the state level.

Benningfield says, “We’ve never had to ask for help from the community, we’re asking for it now. We’ve got two bills going through our legislature, we need them to call their representatives to support this bill. I’m very concerned about the club but we’re not going anywhere.”

Commander Benningfield said the two bills going through legislature are called B-R 127 and B-R 247.

The post was first built by veterans in the 40s and rebuilt after a fire in the 50s.
