Victim killed in North First Avenue crash owned bakery shop in Evansville

Eyewitness News is learning more about a woman who was killed Tuesday morning in a crash on North First Avenue in Evansville.

Darla J. Smith owned a bakery for nearly 40 years. Smith owned Daily’s Bakery on North Main Street in Evansville.

According to Daily’s Bakery’s website, the business has been family owned and operated for three generations.

Kelley Coures says Smith was a huge part of the North Main Street Project.

The 72-year-old was killed when police say 54-year-old William Buckman crashed into her vehicle. Smith was taken to an area hospital, where she later died.

Police say Buckman was high on meth and pot when he crashed into Smith’s vechile.

Buckman remains hospitalized with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. He will face charges in connection to the crash once he’s released.
