VINCENNES, Ind. (WEHT) — A Vincennes man said he was mentally ill when he murdered his five-year-old son in April 2017.

Robert Baldwin is accused of suffocating and strangling his son at their home.

Police said Baldwin called 911, saying, “I killed my son.”

Baldwin made a guilty plea due to mental illness on Monday afternoon in Knox Circuit Court.

He was charged with one count each of murder, strangulation, and battery of a person less than 14 years of age.

Baldwin faces 45 to 65 years in prison.

Court documents show he has a long history of treatment for mental illness, but officials said the notation of mental illness does not change the potential sentence.

It could impact how Baldwin would be housed by the Department of Corrections.

Baldwin will be back in court for sentencing on August 23.
