KNOX COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) – Shortly before 10 Thursday night, Indiana State Police responded to a crash on U.S. 41, north of Willow Street, in Vincennes.

During a preliminary investigation, ISP says that 26-year-old Kayla Jones of Bicknell, entered U.S. 41 northbound from Willow Street, and struck a moped.

The accident claimed the life of a passenger on the moped, 21-year-old Skylar Newton, of Washington, Indiana.

Troopers say Newton was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene.

ISP says 22-year-old Robert Vaquero, of Huntingburg, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, but he was later airlifted to St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville where he is currently being treated for serious injuries.

Indiana State Police say Vaquero was also not wearing a helmet.

Troopers say Jones was not injured in the accident.

According to investigating troopers, Jones did not see the moped until just prior to the collision.

Troopers inspected the moped and determined that the rear taillight was not illuminated at the time of the crash.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Department, Vincennes Township Fire Department and Knox County Coroner’s Office assisted in the accident.
