FRANKFORT, Ky. (WEHT) – Governor Andy Beshear announced COVID-19 numbers continue to surge in Kentucky, reporting 426 new cases on Friday. This is the second-highest single-day total the state has seen since the pandemic began.
Governor Beshear also announced a significant number of children under the age of 5 are included in today’s numbers, including a 3-year-old in Henderson County and a 2-month-old in Hopkins County.
The state also reported eight new deaths on Friday. Additionally, the positivity rate in the state has more than doubled this week alone, reaching 4.5% in the past week. This is an indication that the case numbers have not risen because of the increased number of people getting tested.
Because of rising numbers, Governor Beshear announced a new mask mandate for Kentuckians, requiring masks be worn in all public places. The new requirement began Friday at 4 pm CT.
Governor Beshear also referenced the attempted restraining order announced yesterday in Scott County. He said this motion does not stop the mask mandate from going into effect on Friday. He expects the court of appeals to overturn the restraining order, as well as the Kentucky Supreme Court.
“People say it’s the Attorney General versus the Governor. It’s not. It’s the people of Kentucky versus the coronavirus,” said Beshear. “It’s just about doing what’s right for the people of Kentucky.”
Governor Beshear also discussed the possibility of high school sports like football in the fall, saying “sports in Kentucky are going to be dependent on what we do now” and will only happen if we follow guidelines between now and then. Many schools have had to stop football practices across the state after student athletes have tested positive.
Beshear also provided an update on day care centers in the state, saying numbers are concerning. As of Friday, 13 childcare centers in the state have had a case.
