In about two years, the new hotel and apartments will replace the old offices and muffler shops across the street from the convention center.
They're still drawings today, but in at least two years, downtown's newest hotel and apartments will be built.
"The fact that we can have apartments, condos, people coming down here, it's just the beginning of more apartments and brownstones to come afterwards," says Owensboro Mayor Tom Watson.
Officials with Gulfstream, the project's developers. say the building will still be 12 to 15 stories tall, have more than 160 apartments and 120 hotel rooms, with a built in parking garage.
"There's only so much land in downtown Owensboro and to utilize that land as best as possible without spending another $3 million the next block over to build a parking structure, makes sense," says Jack Wells of Riverfront Brio, LLC.
The hotel flag won't be revealed for another two to three weeks.
"We've got the standard Hampton, a very nice Holiday Inn here, we've got another Marriott project off of Highway 54 and East Parrish, so we were looking for something a little different," says Wells.
Mayor Watson says they're still determining how many parking spaces will be reserved for hotel guests and apartment residents. Project developer jack wells adds the apartments will vary in price, but that has yet to be determined.
"There will be ranges of prices from high end to middle income. We think it's going to be an affordable project."
Last week, the Owensboro Metropolitan Board of Adjustment gave developers permission to start construction. Devlopers say a groundbreaking will happen as early as the end of May. The project is expected to be done sometime in 2021.
Owensboro City Commissioners will discuss an agreement between the city and developers on a $4.6 million financial incentive for the hotel and apartment's construction and opening. It will happen at tomorrow's City Commission meeting at city hall. In the municipal order, the city will get the money back through revenues collected as part of the downtown TIF district.
OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) - Owensboro Mayor Tom Watson and the city’s Board of Commissioners will hold a press conference at 3 p.m.
They’re expected to announce a major downtown project.
The press conference is being held at the Owensboro Convention Center.
