VANDERBURGH COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) — A quiet, private neighborhood turned deadly. A 51-year-old woman from Evansville has been charged with murdering her husband after fatally stabbing him last night. Now, neighbors are mourning the loss of their friends life.
“A woman had called central dispatch, and advised she had stabbed her husband and he may be deceased,” said Vanderburgh County Sheriff Dave Wedding.
When the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene, authorities say they found 51-year-old Wendy Owen Payne, distraught and covered in blood in her backyard.
“During the autopsy, they did show that the deceased individual had some wounds on his hands that may be associated with defense wounds where he may have put his hands up in an effort to keep the knife from striking him,” said Wedding. “After they examined the subject, they determined that he did die from a sharp force trauma to the chest which probably penetrated the heart.”
Now, Wendy is in jail. Charged with murdering her husband, 60-year-old Edward Payne. Tonight, neighbors are speaking out and mourning the loss of Edward’s life.
“He didn’t do anything to hurt anyone. He was the helping guy, a lovable guy,” said one neighbor, who did not want to be identified. He said this dispute was just the most recent in a long history of arguments.
“I’ve seen both sides of it going down there and him being away. If he’d come down here, she was bothering him. It was a toxic situation and I guess he did the best he could,” said the neighbor.
The resident also said Wendy’s sister informed him that Edward had just become a grandfather the same day he died.
“I guess that’s why i’m taking it so hard. Because you don’t meet people like him every day, you know,” said the neighbor.
Wendy is set to appear in court later this week.
