EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) — May 20 isn’t just the celebration of another birthday for Crystal Helsley. For her family, it’s a celebration of how far she, and her son, have come.
Crystal was involved in a motorcycle accident on May 13, 2002, which left her with brain injuries.
“This has been a really long road to get here where she is,” mom Wendy says. “She spent 4.5 months in a coma, this happened seven days before her 18th birthday.”
18 years to the day of Crystal’s accident, her son, River, graduated from Pike Central High School. Crystal now lives on her own.
“I just thought this 36th birthday was special because of her son graduating high school and him becoming an adult now,” Wendy said. “It’s just amazing, this day. She’s on her own, he’s on his own. We did it.”
Her family brought her gifts, cake and ice cream to celebrate.
