Local Veterans Begin New Tradition for Memorial Day

With most Memorial Day ceremonies taking place on Monday, the Vanderburgh County Veterans Council is trying something new. For the first time ever, local veterans are kicking off the weekend by having a Friday service.

In downtown Evansville, they held a special wreath ceremony at the downtown monuments and hope it’ll catch on with veterans from other parts of the Tri-State.

“What we thought we’d do as a veterans council board,” said Stephen Melcher, “we’d do this one this year while we got the two memorials here and see how it works and by next year. This should all be done, the Vanderburgh County Memorial Plaza and Walkway.”

Local veterans will still conduct services on Monday at both cemeteries. One takes place at locust hill at 10 a.m. There’s another at Oak Hill at 11 a.m.
