A teacher and coach at Reitz Memorial High School passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday.
Dylan Barnes, 43, taught and coached cross country and track at the school since 2003. No other details surrounding his death are available at this time.
The students, faculty, staff, and other members of the Reitz Memorial Family have been notified.
Clergy and counselors from Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Evansville and Youth First are on site at the high school to support the students and staff. They will remain there through out the day and will be available for support this week and as long as needed.
“The entire Reitz Memorial family is shocked and saddened by the unexpected loss of a beloved and gifted teacher and coach,” said John K. Browning, President of Reitz Memorial High School. “We ask everyone to join us in prayer for Mr. Barnes, his family and the family of Reitz Memorial.”
Browning announced that a candlelight memorial for Mr. Barnes will be held Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. at the front of the school, 1500 Lincoln Avenue in Evansville.
All other after-school activities today, including athletic practices, have be canceled.
Athletic Director Charles Roberts released the following statement:
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Coach Dylan Barnes this morning. All of us in the Memorial High School Community are at a loss and wish to send thoughts and prayers out to his family, especially his mother Lois Aigner. Coach Barnes left behind an accomplished track/cross-country program… He was a positive role model and motivator and had a tremendous impact in our school and on our student-athletes. Dylan Barnes leaves behind a lasting legacy at Memorial and he will be greatly missed.”
