Mesker Zoo Dedicates Playground to Donna the Hippo

She spent more than 50 years of her life at Mesker Park Zoo, and now a playground is open in honor of Donna the hippo.

According to park officials, Donna was recognized as the oldest living hippo in the world.

After she passed, park officials say they wanted to create a place to for all who knew her to remember her.

Marketing Director Abigail Adler says the zoo began building the playground in the winter for families to have fun on as well as to remember Donna.

Even though Donna passed in 2012, park visitors today still remember her and how loving she was to all who stopped by to say hello.

Heather Palmer says she and her family loved Donna and miss her dearly. She says her oldest son, who is now five, would always ask to go see Donna when visiting the zoo. She says she is glad to see the playground because there is something there for all ages.

Stephanie Duncan says her family has been visiting the park for the last six years and says Donna was a fixture to the zoo and her children would always ask to go see Donna. She says the playground brings back fond memories of bringing her children to the zoo and seeing Donna and how she brought smiles to her children’s face.

If you wish to see the new playground and the memorial, it’s just a short walk down the hill on the left from the main entrance.
