Community celebrates Aces big win

National News

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WEHT) – Excitement has continued throughout the Tri-State all day after Tuesday night’s game, where the Purple Aces knocked off the top ranked Wildcats at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

Eyewitness News’ Grace Hayba has been covering the excitement and action all day and she’s at Chick-fil-A, where they’re getting a big response.

The line here at Chick-fil-A continues to grow by the hour with cars lined up bumper to bumper around the block to get a free celebratory sandwich.

Earlier in the day, there was another line at Ridgeway University Center on UE’s campus.

Hundreds showed up to celebrate the big win.

The mantra of a small college erupted overnight.

“We have been part of the fabric of the City of Evansville for the last hundred years, so this is not only exciting for our University, but it’s really exciting for the whole city.”

“Once we got the rebound, and I found out we won, it was just a lot of emotions, like everything, all the hard work we did over the summer paid off. That’s how I felt.”
While some say the win “put Evansville on the map”, others say the city was already there.

“I think it shows that we care about Evansville Basketball and the story tradition of this great program and I think it’ll motivate a lot of people to get to the Ford center to not only watch them Thursday night, but for the rest of the season.”

“We were trending last night, so you would expect a lot of people to be on our Athletics Website but the number of people that were on our Academic Website last night, shows what the University is, not only our basketball program, but the whole University.”
Through it all there was a common theme…

“More fans, more wins.”

“This is great for our state; this is great for our program and all the people that support us and our alumni and that’s what it’s about.”

You can show your support for the Purple Aces Thursday night when they take on the IU Kokomo Cougars at 6:00 at the Ford Center.
