KANSAS (WDAF) – A Kansas middle school student has been charged with a felony after police say she made a potential threat by pointing her finger like a gun at other students.
Police in overland park Kansas – outside Kansas City – say no actual weapon was found.
A school resource arrested the 13-year-old girl at the school.
The school district would not speak to the teen’s history — like if she had any prior offenses.
When asked if charging this student with a felony seemed extreme… The district attorney referenced last year’s school shooting in Florida, which left 17 dead.
“I think law enforcement and schools understand that we need to address bad behavior. Not be heavy handed but at the same time, address that bad behavior and prevent it from getting worse.”
The school said this arrest was unrelated to district policy and it was a police decision after hearing about it.
