Millennials are ditching diamond engagement rings for a more affordable alternative

National News

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WEHT/ABC27) – Today’s younger couples are rebelling against a bunch of long-time wedding traditions, like the groom not being allowed to see his bride on the morning of the wedding.

And, forget about the old tradition where the man went into the jewelry store alone to pick out a surprise engagement ring. That is happening less and less these days.

Another tradition that’s getting dropped: buying the largest diamond engagement ring that the guy can afford.

Research shows younger couples are more frugal than GenX or Boomer couples. They’re also more socially-conscious, so mined diamonds just won’t do. Many are going with alternative stones.

Jewelry stores are even embracing the trend and displaying non-traditional engagement bands in their display cases. Even lab-grown diamonds have become wildly popular.

Lab-grown diamonds are less than half the price of a mined, natural diamond but look just as good.

Top alternative stones:

  • Lab-grown diamonds
  • Morganite
  • Aquamarine
  • Tourmaline
  • Moissanite
  • Sapphire
  • Ruby
