New study shows being strict doesn’t help picky eaters

National & World

(WEHT) A new study suggests that parents should take the pressure off of picky eaters and that demanding your children to eat certain foods or punishing them by restricting other foods does not help.

The study, which followed parents and children for five years, was published in the Journal of Pediatrics.

Researchers found that when parents were strict about food with picky eaters, the children became even more picky. The authors explained eating is one of the few things kids can control.

Pediatricians recommend that parents do not demand for children to clean their plates or to use dessert as a reward for doing so. They also say children do best when introduced to new foods earlier in life.

The experts say some kids are just wired to be picky eaters, and one of the best practices is to expose the children to different foods multiple times.
