New York police officer accused of choking Eric Garner has been fired

National News

NEW YORK (CNN) – The officer involved in Eric Garner’s death is off the force.

The New York Police Department announced today Daniel Pantaelo was fired.

Pantaleo was caught on video putting garner in a chokehold in 2014.

Garner repeatedly said “I can’t breathe” and died a short time later.

His final words turned into a rallying cry for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Pantaleo was found guilty in a disciplinary trial earlier this month of using a banned chokehold, and a judge recommended he be fired.

A New York Grand Jury decided not to indict Pantaleo in 2014.

And last month, the Justice Department declined to bring federal Civil Rights charges.
