HAWAII (CNN) – Police have arrested protesters as they blocked a road to Hawaii’s highest peak to try to stop construction of a giant telescope on sacred land.
Officials say construction equipment was going up to begin building the over one-billion-dollar telescope that’s expected to be one of the world’s most advanced.
Native Hawaiian protesters say they’re concerned construction will damage the mountain.
“It was pretty emotional, quite frankly, because some of the people who were arrested were actually related to some of the officers and that was the case in several cases. So, it’s a tough situation for everyone.”
Protesters said they told authorities they would allow technicians to pass if they could drive one car to the summit each day for religious practices.
