Ohio’s Republican Governor John Kasich will announce his presidential candidacy on July 21 according to sources who spoke to CNN.
The formal announcement will happen at Kasich’s alma mater, the Ohio State University, according to advisors.
From there, Kasich will kick off his campaign with trips to early nominating states.
The governor is expected to run largely on his economic credentials.
He built a record of fiscal conservatism while serving in Congress from 1983 to 2001.
But as Kasich joins the crowded field of GOP contenders, he will likely face scrutiny for his record on healthcare.
As governor, he expanded medicaid in Ohio and used state funds made available through Obamacare, but at the same time, he publicly opposed the law.
