OPD: Two arrested in connection with Owensboro murders

Two people have been arrested in connection with Thursday’s shooting investigation in Owensboro.

Arnett B. Baines, 30, and Cylar L. Shemwell, 31, have both been charged with three counts of murder and one count of assault in the 1st Degree.

The victims killed in the shooting have been identified as Jay Michael Sowders, 43; Robert D. Smith Jr., 35; and 18-year-old Christopher Carie.

A fourth victim, 35-year-old Carmen R. Vanegas, is currently being treated for injuries. Vanegas is still in critical condition.

The shooting happened in the 900 block of Audubon Ave. in reference to a homicide investigation.

Once they arrived, they found two people dead and two injured. The injured were sent to the hospital. Both were in critical condition.

One them passed away at the hospital.

It’s unclear what led to the deaths, or what connection the suspects had with the victims.

The is an ongoing investigation.
