As Kentucky high school basketball teams keep playing to determine the state champ, a local middle school team celebrates their state title.
A team from Owensboro Middle School North won a statewide tournament this past weekend in Lexington.
“It was tough competition. We had to play hard to win it all,” says OMS North Guard Cayman Powell. They played hard against teams from across the state.
“Lincoln County, there’s a team from Pulaski, from all around Louisville and Lexington,” Powell recalled.
In the end, the Owensboro Middle School North 8Th Grade Boys Basketball team became state champs, their first time finishing first in school history.
“It was very exciting,” says Powell. “Everybody was very hyped up about it. Every body back home, when they found out about it, `they were hyped too.”
“First time in school history that Owensboro Middle School has won state. It was very gratifying. I was happy for the kids. Happy for the parents,” adds Coach Kyle Magill.
They won the Kentucky Basketball Commission tournament which had a more than 80 team field.
“Competition was very good,” says Magill. “Like I told the guys, these other teams are up here for a reason too. They’re all good teams. All well coached. All run good stuff.”
Their road included a last second game winning shot by Kenyatta Carbon. As they celebrate their current glory, they now eye their next state title at the next level.
“We’re going to go to high school, try to win state there,” Powell says.
